We drove from Beijing in about 1.5 hours with a driver and our guide to Jiankou. From there we have entered the unrestored section of the road via a wooded, steep rocky path. From there we walked to Mutianyu to the fully restored section. It is worthwhile to see both sections of the wall Our highly competent guide Leo photographed us several times and sent us the photos via email a few days after the tour. In Mutianyu, we were picked up by our drivers and taken to a very good local restaurant. We can fully recommend this agency.

We did the group trip from Jiankou to Mutianyu on possibly the worst day possible. It poured all day long with lots of thunder, lightning and constant fog. Despite the weather, the trip was amazing and wonderful, the highlight of our time in China. Peter, our guide, was a huge part of it. Peter is energetic and knowledgable, speaks great English, and in the bad conditions kept our safety in mind. The Jiankou section of the wall is unrepaired and requires some serious care as the edge of the wall has no “railings.” One wrong step and you could fall a long way. But Peter alerted us to the tricky places and made sure we got plenty of rest and water. You really couldn’t ask for a better guide! The hike itself surpassed expectations. It was often foggy, but when the fog cleared the view was absolutely stunning! The lunch we had might have been the most pleasant meal we had in China with Peter there to help us try some new things. We’d do it again.

Myself and 3 friends did the hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu in April. Wow! What a beautiful experience with Tony our guide. Although the weather decided to provide us with a snow storm Tony continued to be an amazing guide till the end. He also gave us some great recommendations for the rest of our stay in Beijing. The lunch was amazing and Tony organized the best food even keeping in mind one of us did not eat pork and organizing birthday noodles for my friend ( a very thoughtful gesture)! Thank you Tony for a memorable day! Highly recommended tour!

I’ve been to China 20+ times and have never been to Beijing or the Great Wall. I decided this trip to fly to Beijing and see the Great Wall and Forbidden City. I only had one day and wanted to see as much of the Great Wall as possible. I wanted to see a “wild” (unrestored) section as well as a restored section. We also wanted a challenging hike. Leo suggested the Jiankou to Mutianyu section hike. We chose a private tour with Leo and it was the best decision ever! It was my son and I and we had the best time! Leo is very knowledgable on Chinese history and was very engaging. The hike was very challenging but very doable. It really is a once in a lifetime experience that everyone should try to see in their lifetime. Worth every penny. Don’t skimp on this adventure and book a cheap tour. After the hike he took us to a quaint little restaurant in a nearby village. I have eaten a lot of Chinese food in the past 15 years and I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I have had. My 21 year old son that hates cabbage ate a whole bowl of it there. Very tasty. Leo went above and beyond to make sure we had a fantastic experience. I highly recommend using Leo! Small touring company with an attention to detail. I recommend hiking shoes with ankle support as the terrain is unpredictable.

I HIGHLY recommend booking a tour with Beijing Walking Tours. We took the 1-day hiking tour from Jiankou to Mutianyu with Leo and I’m so glad we did! The tour starts by taking you through a forest and then up to parts of the wall that are unrestored. It ends at Mutianyu where the toboggan is (hike is about 6-7miles). The sights were AMAZING. I took so many pictures that I don’t know what to do with them! Leo was great and very informative. I was able to learn so much about China just from our conversations. We were picked up promptly at our hotel, got to the wall after about an hour of travel. The hike itself is not dangerous but there are challenging parts so it would be good to come prepared with proper attire. The best part of this hike is that it starts off in an area where there are very few people, so it allows for you to really appreciate the wall and all of its Grandeur. Also, I highly recommend the Toboggan ride down – it’s such a great way to end the hike. Lunch was a little late (depends on when you finish your hike) but it was seriously the best meal I had during my entire trip in China. My friends and I did eat breakfast before the hike, but Leo and the driver had us stop at a local 7/11 before we set out on our trip to make sure we had energy. Thanks Leo! You likely will get back to your hotel around 5-6pm. Overall, if you are going to visit the great wall and are looking for an adventure that includes some challenges, serenity, amazing views, delicious food, and an awesome tour guide, then you should really book through Beijing Walking Tours!

We really enjoyed the Jiankou to Mutianyu Hiking tour with Leo! This tour took us from the unrestored, less touristy Jiankou portion of the wall all the way to the more restored Mutianyu portion. Leo spoke English very well and provided a wealth of knowledge about the wall and history of China. He’s very funny and laid back, so we really enjoyed getting to spend the day with him. The price of the tour was very reasonable, and included pick-up/drop-off, entrance fees, water, snacks, and lunch. We were staying at an Air BnB in a closed community, but Leo made sure we had a convenient spot for pick-up right outside the gates. Lunch was an absolute feast! So much food, beer, and baijiu going around! We had a fun!
