Exploring the Vibrant Culture and Nightlife of Sanlitun
Sanlitun, located in the heart of Beijing, is a neighborhood renowned for its vibrant culture and bustling nightlife. This dynamic area has undergone a significant transformation over the years, evolving from a traditional residential district into a trendy hub for locals and tourists alike. With its eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, Sanlitun has become a must-visit destination for those seeking a memorable night out in Beijing.
How to go there?
If you’re coming from the Beijing Capital International Airport, you can take a taxi, or the Airport Express train to reach the city center. You can hop on the subway or taxi directly to Sanlitun from there.
Alternatively, find the nearest subway station, purchase a ticket, board Line 10, and alight at Tuanjiehu Station for Sanlitun.
It’s also worth noting that Sanlitun is a pedestrian-friendly area, so walking is convenient if you stay nearby.
The transformation of Sanlitun into a nightlife hotspot
Sanlitun’s transformation from a traditional neighborhood into a vibrant nightlife hotspot is a testament to the city’s ever-changing landscape. In recent years, the area has attracted a diverse crowd of locals and expats, establishing itself as a go-to destination for entertainment and leisure. The transformation began with the Taikoo Li Sanlitun complex, a mixed-use development combining retail, dining, and entertainment. This development has significantly revitalized the area, attracting international brands and fostering a unique blend of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary influences.
Taikoo Li Sanlitun
Taikoo Li Sanlitun, formerly Sanlitun Village, is a renowned shopping center in Beijing’s Chaoyang District. Completed in 2008, it comprises approximately 300 shops and restaurants, including flagship stores, lifestyle brands, and international cuisine. The complex also houses a boutique hotel, The Opposite House, with an eight-screen cinema and a multipurpose event venue. Its open-plan, lane-driven design and a prime location near the CBD make it a popular fashion destination and a hub for experiencing the cosmopolitan lifestyle of Beijing. The shopping center is well-known for its unique architectural design, diverse retail offerings, and vibrant atmosphere. It is a must-visit destination for fashion enthusiasts and free spirits in Beijing.
Top bars and nightlife venues in Sanlitun
It is said that after the demolition of the Workers’ Stadium, the original MIX, VICS, and CL ceased operations. It is rumored that some individual stores will continue to operate within the stadium once the construction is completed (supposedly by the end of this year), but that remains to be seen in the coming year.
Currently, several establishments are operating within the Workers’ Stadium. These include OT (ONETHIRD), 13 (SIRTEEN), PH, CP (COCOPLUS), the newly opened FRESH (formerly known as Gongti Lugang Xiaozhen), Tian Tang Supermarket (which is more like a bar), Helens, and ELEMENT (which relocated from Gongti to Sanlitun’s Tongying Center). Additionally, there is EGO at the World Trade Street (also a new opening this year, owned by Li Chen).
If you enjoy electronic music genres like BOUNCE, which are more energetic, you can go to OT, 13, CP, EGO, and ELEMENT. These are large-scale bars where the atmosphere is perfect for dancing and can fully satisfy your needs.
If you prefer hip-hop or slow-tempo music styles, then PH, FRESH, EGO (small hall), and OT small hall are more suitable. Now, let’s talk about Tian Tang Supermarket and Helens. There are two Tian Tang Supermarket locations near the Workers’ Stadium, one on Gongti West Road and the other in the World Trade Center Building 3. Helens, on the other hand, is located next to CP.
If we consider Tian Tang Supermarket a bar, Helens is more like a tavern (without a dance floor or DJ; you can’t dance on the seats either). Both places play lively music, but Tian Tang Supermarket doesn’t have many servers, while Helens has servers that will bring you what you order. In Tian Tang Supermarket, you must get everything, including dice cups for games, and you can’t store any alcohol. It’s not bad, but you can’t expect too much because the prices are low. If you decide to go to Tian Tang Supermarket, I recommend the one in World Trade Center Building 3, as many players who have been to the Gongti location have not had good things to say about the environment there.
