Reviewed April 30, 2018, via mobile Sunset tour small group
We had the best time on the sunset tour in a small group. The parts of the wall we went to were not crowded at all, and we were almost the only ones in the old part of the wall. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the sunset, which was slightly rainy, but the rain made the place feel even more magical. We had Tony as our guide, and we couldn’t be happier with him; he had lovely stories about the wall and Chinese culture and history in general.
The dinner was delicious as well, it was nice to try some food recommended by a local.
I contacted Leo about the tour, and he was very informative and replied fast to all my messages.
Thank you for making our last day so special! 多谢!
Reviewed October 5, 2018, A long day to the Wall, but worth it!
We did the Great Wall sunset hike to Jinshanling and Gubeikou. We were picked up promptly by Tony, who was a lovely guide. He spoke very good English and had a great sense of humor. There were only 3 other people on the tour with us, which was good. The drive out to the Jinshanling part of the Wall was long, because of all the traffic congestion. It was worth it, though, as there are hardly any other people at that part of the Wall. We had a great lunch, huge with lots of choices. Beer and other beverages were also included. The second part of the Wall was also enjoyable, again with very few tourists. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t put on a great sunset display but we preferred the later pick-up time and the opportunity to hike the Wall with few other people. Highly recommended, but be prepared for a very long day.
FAQS
How challenging is this hike?
This hike offers flexibility, with distances ranging from 5 km to 10 km. Once we reach the Wall, you’ll have some free time to explore or continue hiking if you wish. The terrain is moderate, so regular sneakers are sufficient for this hike.
Is the Great Wall we visited full of people?
Both sections are far from the city, making it much quieter than Mutianyu and Badaling. Especially when it is not the weekend or a holiday, we were often the only group on the wall.
What time does the tour start and finish?
Our tour typically starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. Since sunset times vary daily, we return to downtown Beijing 2.5 hours after sunset, usually between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Do you always get a great sunset view by the tour?
The weather is always unforeseeable, and the air may be polluted. There is some pollution in winter, but it is always good in summer.
What to take for this hike?
Comfortable shoes or boots are important. We suggest you bring sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, and a cap. Please let me know one day before the tour if you need hiking poles.
When does the tour have lunch? Is it ok for vegetarians?
Lunch is usually served after the hike around 2 pm. In summer, lunch is always late, as the sunset is after 7:30 pm. Please take some snacks with you. We chose a very nice local restaurant with excellent Chinese food. There are a lot of dishes that are good for vegetarians.
How many bottles of water do I need to bring?
Unlimited water bottles are stored in our car/van for you to drink. It would be best if you carried them.
Does the tour happen during the rain or snow?
We only cancel the tour during extreme weather conditions. Otherwise, it continues. Please check the weather report and be prepared.
What is the tipping or gratuities policy?
Tips are always appreciated by our guides but never expected. They should be given if you believe your guide did an outstanding job and, further, if you as an individual want to demonstrate your appreciation for the guide for that job well done. Usually, our clients give 50 to 100 RMB per person.
Does this tour go to any shops?
We don’t go to tourist shops, factories, etc., and waste our precious time.
